Description of activities (native language):

Forests are the world’s largest and most important terrestrial ecosystems. Their role in preserving biodiversity and combatting global warming is therefore incontestable. The EU-funded CLIMB-FOREST project aims to strengthen the European forestry sector’s capacity to mitigate climate change. To that end, it will create a set of working packages centering on mapping current forest management and carbon sequestration in Europe and quantifying biogeochemical and biophysical processes in European forests. Moreover, it will create an innovative model of all relevant actors, encouraging knowledge transfer. Project outcomes will be developed together with stakeholders from the entire forestry sector, so that the new management strategies are both economically viable and at the same time maximize the mitigating effect of European forests on climate change and other ecosystem services. This multi-actor stakeholder co-creation process is a crucial factor for creating attitude change in the policymaking process in the EU and influencing forest owners to adopt to new forest management strategies, thus keeping forests at the forefront of the green transition.

Forest management toolbox

Short summary for practitioners (in English):

This abstract presents a set of different options for forest management called the management toolbox. The aim is that this set of options can be used as guideline by anybody involved in forest management in Europe, to ensure that all aspects of the management are considered at the stand or landscape level. The purpose of this abstract is also to start gathering comments on the toolbox.
A forest management toolbox presents a set of standardized alternatives for forest management and covers two main aspects of forest management today. First, it considers forest resilience against climatic stress and damage (fire, storm, drought and bark beetle outbreaks). Secondly, it considers the balance between a range of ecosystem services, i.e. wood production, biodiversity, recreational values sequestration and storage of carbon for climate change mitigation.
The toolbox contains a structured set of forest management options, to ensure that we have sufficient information to model and evaluate how the forests will perform within a time scale of 40 to 80 years from now. Horizon-Europe CLIMB-FOREST project will place the evaluation along two important dimensions. The first dimension is a range from nature protection to wood production. The second dimension of forest management goes from today’s methods to methods that make the forests strong and resilient towards climatic driven disturbance like fires, storms, draughts, or bark beetle outbreaks.
The management options consider different spatial scales, from single trees or tree groups, via stands to the landscape level. The toolbox contain a set of 13 parameters’ settings for the management choices; 1. Forestry objective, 2. Harvesting type, 3. Age management, 4. Tree species, 5. Within-species genetics, 6. Establishment and regeneration, 7. Density management, 8. Site management options, 9. Edge options, 10. Single-tree or tree-group options, 11. Climatic stress, 12. How to increase resilience of aged trees, and 13. Replicate your management options for nearby stands?
The choice of the dimensions in the toolbox is important for the precision of the modelling outcomes, therefore, we invite practitioners in forestry to comment on the choice of parameter settings for the management alternatives.

Dette sammendraget presenterer et sett med forskjellige alternativer for skogbehandling som vi kaller ei verktøykasse. Målet er at dette settet med alternativer kan brukes av enhver som driver skogbehandling i Europa som et standardisert sett av behandlingsalternativer på bestands- og landskapsnivå.
En verktøykasse for skogbehandling er et sett med standardiserte alternativer som dels kan øke skogens motstandskraft mot skader og stress fra pågående klimaendringer. Samtidig skal de foreslåtte alternativene bidra til en helhetlig produksjon av alle typer økosystemtjenester, altså treproduksjon, biologisk mangfold, rekreasjonsopplevelser og opptak og lagring av karbon for å redusere klimaendringene.
Verktøykassens strukturerte sett med skogbehandlingsalternativer skal også sikre at vi har tilstrekkelig informasjon til å modellere og evaluere hvordan ulike typer skogbehandling vil fungere innenfor en tidsskala på 40 til 80 år fra nå. Prosjektet Horizon-Europe CLIMB-FOREST vil plassere evalueringen langs to viktige dimensjoner. Den første dimensjonen spenner fra naturvern til treproduksjon. Den andre dimensjonen av skogforvaltning går fra dagens metoder til metoder som gjør skogene sterke og motstandsdyktige mot klimatiske forstyrrelser som brann, storm, tørke og barkbilleangrep.
