Resilient Summer Crops

Objective of the project (native language):

La crisi climatica in atto a livello globale ha già mostrato negli ultimi tempi gravi ripercussioni soprattutto sull’agricoltura. Il progetto si propone di rispondere alla sfida climatica promuovendo l'adozione di colture alternative al mais e in grado di adattarsi a condizioni climatiche limitanti come l’innalzamento delle temperature e la riduzione delle precipitazioni.
In particolare, verranno valutate le performance agronomiche e l’adattabilità ai cambiamenti climatici di cereali estivi, quali sorgo (Sorghum bicolor) e miglio (Panicum miliaceum), relativamente alle condizioni ambientali che di volta in volta si presentano e mettendo a punto tecniche agronomiche a basso impatto.

Objective of the project (in English):

The ongoing global climate crisis has already shown serious impacts on agriculture in particular in recent times. The project aims to respond to the climate challenge by promoting the adoption of alternative crops to maize that can adapt to limiting climatic conditions such as rising temperatures and reduced rainfall.
In particular, the agronomic performances and the adaptability to climatic change impacts of summer cereals, such as sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) and millet (Panicum miliaceum), will be evaluated with respect to the environmental conditions of specific areas and by developing low-impact agronomic techniques.

Il progetto realizzerà delle prove sia in parcelle che in pieno campo per valutare le performance agronomiche e l’adattabilità ai cambiamenti climatici di cereali estivi, quali il sorgo (Sorghum bicolor) e il miglio (Panicum miliaceum), valutando la loro adattabilità alle condizioni che di volta in volta si presentano e mettendo a punto tecniche agronomiche a basso impatto. Verrà inoltre condotta un’analisi LCA per determinare e quantificare gli impatti ambientali legati alla coltivazione del mais e alla coltivazione delle nuove accessioni.

Description of activities (in English):

The project will conduct both plot and field trials to assess the agronomic performance and adaptability to climate change of summer cereals, such as sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) and millet (Panicum miliaceum), evaluating their adaptability to the conditions that arise from time to time and developing low-impact agronomic techniques. An LCA analysis will also be conducted to determine and quantify the environmental impacts of maize cultivation and the cultivation of new accessions.

Short summary for practitioners (in English):

The identification of sorghum and millet genotypes that are less demanding than maize in terms of chemical inputs and water requirements, with the associated low-impact cultivation techniques, will make it possible to rationalize water resources and significantly reduce insecticide treatments.
Specifically, the techniques and genotypes identified will determine the following results:
- Identification of varieties that are more resilient to climate change than maize, in particular: less susceptible to phytosanitary stress, more competitive against weeds, and able to ensure optimal production and quality levels even under conditions of water and heat stress. These varieties will be identified through field trials and the analysis of data regarding several years of trials already carried out by project partners;
- Identification of more resilient varieties in terms of less susceptibility to biotic and abiotic stress so as to result in less use of environmentally impactful technical input and a real environmental benefit;
- The identification of resilient and less demanding genotypes will also lead to economic as well as environmental advantages due to the reduced use of technical input and water resources.
The results can be used not only by farms linked to the lead partner and the University of Bologna, but by all farmers that intend to diversify their maize cultivation.

L’identificazione di genotipi di sorgo e miglio meno esigenti del mais in termini di input chimici e di esigenze idriche, con le relative tecniche colturali a basso impatto, consentirà di razionalizzare le risorse idriche e ridurre sensibilmente i trattamenti insetticidi.
In particolare, le tecniche e i genotipi individuati consentiranno i seguenti risultati:
- Identificazione di varietà più resilienti ai cambiamenti climatici rispetto al mais, in particolare: meno soggette a problematiche fitosanitarie, più competitive nei confronti di specie vegetali infestanti e in grado di garantire livelli produttivi e qualitativi ottimali anche in condizioni di stress idrici e termici. Queste varietà saranno individuate attraverso le prove in campo e l’utilizzo e l’elaborazione di dati riguardanti diversi anni di sperimentazione già realizzati dai partner del progetto;
- Identificazione di varietà più resilienti in termini di minor suscettibilità alle avversità in modo da determinare un minore utilizzo di mezzi tecnici impattanti per l’ambiente e un concreto vantaggio ambientale;
- L’identificazione di genotipi resilienti e meno esigenti determinerà inoltre un risparmio economico oltre che ambientale per il minore utilizzo di mezzi tecnici e di risorse idriche.
I risultati potranno essere utilizzati non solo dalle aziende agricole collegate al capofila e all’Università di Bologna, ma da tutte le aziende che intendono diversificare la coltura del mais.
